Summary

The Safety Specialist maintains the organization’s workplace safety expertise, develops, and conducts safety training, investigates injuries, and promotes monthly safety campaigns. The Safety Specialist works closely with Associates, Group Leaders, Managers and Engineers to promote workplace safety and to listen and respond to safety concerns and recommendations for improvement.

 

Essential Job Functions

The essential functions described below are intended to broadly define the expectations of the role.

 

  1. Conduct safety audits on production floor
  2. Participate in conducting equipment reviews and Safety buyoffs for new or modified equipment
  3. Respond to Associate concerns
  4. Review and interpret OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, or other applicable regulations
  5. Create and update Safety Engineering Standards, SIA Safety Policies and Procedures
  6. Assist with and investigate injuries and determine root causes
  7. Investigate Powered Material Handling Equipment incidents and determine root causes
  8. Coordinate Production, Maintenance and Engineering Meetings to determine countermeasures for open punch list items
  9. Work with Section Managers to assist in developing Injury Reduction Plans
  10. Assist with developing safety campaigns or other activities to eliminate injuries
  11. Develop, coordinate, and conduct safety training as needed to include, but not limited to, Powered Material Handling Equipment and Crane, Lockout Tagout, Confined Space, Fire Prevention, Fire Extinguisher, Haz Comm/GHS, Emergency Response, Aerial Lift, OSHA 10 Hour, PPE, New Hire Orientation, other required OSHA Training
  12. Assist with developing new safety training to include orientation training for New Hires and Contractors
  13. Input, file all training records or associated documents, assist with ISO45001 management system
  14. Assist with packaging sketch safety reviews for racks/ totes/ equipment
  15. Online tracking of Safety Data Sheets including reviews/ edits/ updates
  16. All other duties as assigned

Required Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field

 

Preferred Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety or Industrial Hygiene required plus 5-10 years relevant experience
  • ASP, CSP or similar certification

 

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access
  • Ability to work and build relationships with all levels of the organization (Managers, Group Leaders, Engineers, Production Associates)

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role will not supervise other Associates.

 

Work Environment

This role operates approximately 50% of the time in a professional open office environment subject to frequent interruptions and distractions and approximately 50% of the time an industrial manufacturing setting that will include moving and/or assembly lines. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. The role frequently collaborates with colleagues, internal customers/Associates, and management.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an Associate with or without a reasonable accommodation to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. While performing the duties of this role, the Associate is required to be at work as scheduled consistently and dependably, talk, and hear.  The Associate is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger for keyboarding, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.  

 

Work Hours

This role generally works administrative hours (8:30 am to 5:00 pm four day per week) with 1st and 2nd shift coverage (6:00am – 2:30pm, 12:30pm – 9:00 p.m.) as part of team rotation and occasional alternate hours to meet safety training objectives. This role is subject to occasional Saturday and/or Sunday overtime to meet demands of production. This role does not currently allow for remote work opportunities.

 

Travel

Occasional travel, including overseas travel, may be required mainly for off-site training, visiting suppliers, and/or business collaboration purposes.
