Summary
The In-Process Control (IPC) Assembly Engineer is responsible for the quality of trim and engine shops. This role identifies issues and optimizes productions processes and equipment through root cause analysis to achieve the safety, quality, output, and cost goals of the organization. Collects production data and applies scientific and statistical methods to analyze, document, and diagram production processes. This role is responsible for identifying production problems and likewise identifying methods for resolution. The IPC Assembly Engineer evaluates quality, then recommends and implements changes to equipment, work methods and other aspects of production to improve the utilization of all relevant resources.
Essential Job Functions
The essential functions described below are intended to broadly define the expectations of the role.
- Lead, prioritize and assign problem solving activities for chronic or repetitive defects affecting plant performance
- Determine and implement corrective actions. Follow up on corrective action reports to assure adequate response from responsible shops
- Collect and analyze data from the manufacturing process or sampling groups that are causing a negative impact on SIA’s manufacturing processes
- Performs studies to identify root cause on complex issues involving function of various automotive systems to resolve issues
- Serves as subject matter expert for department and plant as applicable for cross functional teams, audit groups, and training
- Creates and leads cross-functional task teams to recommend and countermeasure plant-wide issues
- Participates in ISO and safety management activities of the section
- Manages projects as assigned

Required Education, Experience and Qualifications
- Associates degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field, plus 1-3 years of relevant experience. 5 or more years of related automotive manufacturing experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirement
- Knowledge of basic statistics and process control
Preferred Education, Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, or related field
- 3 or more years of experience in automotive manufacturing engineering
- Demonstrated experience using data to solve assembly problems
- ASQ, Six Sigma Black Belt or similar certifications
- Experience with 3D Magic, PC Dimis, Polyworks or other measurement software.
- Experience with Catia, Solidworks or other similar 3D CAD software.
- Experience with the PDCA cycle
Skills and Knowledge Required
- Strong analytical troubleshooting skills
- Experience with Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to interpret blueprints, parts, and assembly drawings
- Familiar with measurement equipment
- Ability to effectively multi-task, adhere to deadlines, and be able to work collaboratively within a team as well as autonomously.
Work Environment
This role operates in a professional open office environment subject to frequent interruptions and distractions, particularly during heavy customer service periods (e.g., in-between production shifts). Required to work in an industrial manufacturing setting that will include moving and/or assembly lines. This role is required to utilize manufacturing equipment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. The role frequently collaborates with colleagues, internal customers/Associates, external contractors, and management.
Work Hours
This role generally works administrative hours (8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday – Friday) and is subject to occasional overtime to meet demands of production, which may include multiple Saturdays per year and occasional daily overtime. This role does not currently allow for remote work opportunities.
Travel
Occasional travel, including overseas travel, may be required mainly for off-site training or business collaboration purposes.
