Company Overview: Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. or “SIA”, located in Lafayette, Indiana, is the only Subaru vehicle manufacturing facility outside of Japan. SIA is a 4.4 million square foot automotive OEM – meaning our manufacturing process begins with coils of steel and ends with the high-quality vehicles you see out on the roads. SIA is the safest automotive manufacturing plant in the United States and is also a pillar in the community due to its numerous fundraising activities held onsite, donations to local charities and plentiful volunteer opportunities. SIA is a frontrunner in environmental conservation being the first Zero-Landfill automotive manufacturing plant and the first to have its campus designated a backyard wildlife habitat. SIA has grown tremendously since its 1989 beginnings and continues to be an example of success within the automotive industry.

 

Position Overview: This is a rare opportunity to join the software development team at SIA in a leadership position as a first-level supervisor.  Lead a team of experienced developers responsible for developing and maintaining a broad portfolio of software that runs SIA’s business.  Own and conduct all aspects of software development in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.  Manage projects, contribute to technical direction, and drive continuous improvement.

 

Outline of duties:

 

  • Own and lead all aspects of the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), as both a group leader and a senior developer.
  • Receive project and change requests, ensuring key information is collected.  Prioritize projects and tasks in coordination with other development groups, section management, and other stakeholders.
  • Plan and manage projects.  Deliver them on time, and within scope and budget.
  • Lead investigations and troubleshooting of issues, assess impact, and ensure root cause is identified.  Propose and implement solutions to prevent recurrent problems.
  • Manage responses to ad hoc requests for information quickly and accurately, with an eye to developing self-service solutions for recurring requests.
  • Ensure the quality, security, and timeliness of your group’s deliverables through thoughtful direction and judicious review.
  • Manage developer performance: plan training, mentor staff, and write performance reviews.
  • Ensure developers have the tools and support they need to develop world-class solutions.  Foster an environment of entrepreneurship and ownership that builds elegant solutions that deliver business value.
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences at all levels of the organization.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations, report team and project status, document problems and resolutions.
  • Be a champion of good process, integrated end-to-end solutions, and continuous improvement, both in the development process and in the business as whole. 
  • Develop and maintain team expertise in in-house systems and business processes.
  • Build and maintain a trusted advisor relationship with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate change management competency to ensure that the upstream implications and downstream impacts of proposed changes and issues are addressed.
  • Continuous learning: Maintain a working knowledge of the “state of the art” in software development broadly.  Identify and act on opportunities to help SIA take advantage of improvements in development speed and quality, application capability and performance, and cybersecurity. 
  • Guide continuous modernization/evergreening of supported applications and related infrastructure. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent preferred. 
    • Combination of bachelor’s or master's degree in any field and relevant experience considered.
  • 7+ years development experience, 3+ years supervisory software development experience or equivalent combination of senior developer and leadership or project management roles. 
  • Experience working in either Java or COBOL. 
    • If Java, knowledge of contemporary design patterns, JEE application servers, and JavaScript libraries expected.
    • If COBOL, knowledge of JCL and mainframe application architecture expected, along with a strong general understanding of web-based application architecture.
  • For all backgrounds, strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Master’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent preferred. 
  • Experience working with DB2 and SQL Server.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with SAP.  Experience integrating with SAP a plus.
  • Familiarity with data analytics.
